The book moves at a steady pace and the writing's clear and direct. Foat doesn't gloss over the difficulties these women face, making it easy to appreciate how much they accomplish. The author also does a great job keeping readers on their toes. One of the most intriguing developments occurs when two of the women come under official scrutiny. As a result, long-buried secrets begin to surface. As secrets come to light, the story becomes about much more than how the women are helping in the war effort. Readers looking for historical fiction about an overlooked wartime experience will want to pick this one up. Foat combines authentic period detail with memorable characters and a mystery that continually shifts direction. The result is a story that shines a light on an important chapter of history while delivering plenty of emotional investment along the way.
I absolutely loved this sequel (even more than the first one although that was brilliant too) - I am so invested in the characters and Joanna really brought them to life. I felt like I was in the forests with them and my admiration of the real life Lumberjills has grown even more. There were some really interesting twists and reveals. It is simply a cracking good story that would appeal to so many people. The book is crammed with history but told in a human way (the only way I like to read history books) and I cannot wait for the next instalment.
